No Other Gods-Week 6 and a Get-Together!

Okay, this week was all about focusing on the God of Gods. Let's talk about Him first and then I'll give you some get-together info. :) Here are your discussion questions for this week.

1. What practical steps can we take toward improving our ability to sit, listen, and call on God? Has anything specifically worked for you? Can you tell a big difference when you do those things?

2. Have you ever had an experience with a physical idol, similar to Alli's experience with the Athena statue? How does it make you feel about your idols?

3. What attributes of God have shown themselves to you this week?

I can't wait to read your responses! Now, onto the party!

Can you believe this is already week 6? We only have two weeks left! You know what that means don't you? A Get-Together! Any of you located anywhere near St. Louis, we'll be getting together at Dianna's place for brunch on November 8th. So I have a few questions for you about our Get-Together, of course, involving food! :) To the Central-ladies, I'll be sending you info with time and directions, etc. If you aren't a Central girl, but would like to come, email me at hdvogel@gmail.com and I'll include you in the details!

This book has lots of recipes in it and they sound so scrumptious to try. We already have expressed desire for the pumpkin muffins and pot roast, but that doesn't necessarily sound like brunch? Maybe it does to you? Okay, so I'm thinking either we all pick a recipe from the book to try and bring it to the brunch or we all bring our favorite brunch food to share. Which would you rather do? Any other suggestions? Include your answers in the comments below and whether or not you will be attending. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Good thing it's almost lunch time. Love you ladies! Have a wonderful week!

1. I'll admit I'm not the best listener in the world, so I'm probably not a good one to answer this question. Somehow listening to God is even harder for me than listening to a friend. I have a hard time "focusing" and then not questioning what I "heard". I will say that one thing that has worked for me is to get up early in the morning and jump on the treadmill and spend some time with God that way. The walking keeps my body and mind alert.

2. I can't say that I have had any of these experiences. Maybe I need to get out more? :)

3. Jehovah-Jireh! My provider! He is amazing. I've also been shown just how much God loves me and cares for me in the little things. I'll maybe share a story with you at our get-together.

Okay, I will definitely be at our get-together. Wouldn't miss it for the world and am so looking forward to it! I'm game for our own brunch food or for recipes in the book, that's why I'm asking you the questions! I definitely want the pumpkin muffins included! Next week's chicken cutlets sound really good too. Oh, and I'm a sucker for quiche or egg dishes. I love brunch! I can't wait to hear what you all want to do!

Oh I'm so sorry I made my blog (another) idol and had to drop out in the middle of this study. Though I'm not able to do this with you guys, I do know the blessing it is to those who complete it. Hope you are enjoying it as much as I did.

And, I wish I could join you at your get together.... but it's a bit too far from Ohio! Hope you all have a great time!!!

Hugs,
Kim

I am REALLY looking forward to our get together at my place! I'll leave up all my fall decorations for ya! Since it is brunch, I'm game for anything too, whether our own recipes or the book's & I agree with you, Hope, definitely the pumpkin muffins!

I have had such a crazy, busy week that I haven't read the lesson. I had to have some minor surgery! I had a couple of bumps removed that came back cancerous! Aaaugh! So on Tues. I had surgery to remove the surrounding tissue, on my collarbone area & on my back. Don't worry, I'm doing okay. :-) But please say a little prayer for me, okay? Then we were busy all week getting ready for our big hayride, plus we had company over the weekend.

So I thank God I had just enough energy to make it thru a very busy week!

I'll be back later to answer questions!

I second Hope's statement...I LOVE brunchy foods! My vote is to make a favorite brunch recipe or a recipe from the book that could cross-over for brunch, like the muffins or other dessert recipe. I will definitely be there with a hankering for some great autumn brunch food, and of course, great company of friends, too!

I'll check back in later to share my answers to this week's questions!

1. I tend to be better at talking at God rather than sitting and listening to Him. Last night, though, after I finished the lesson, I went back through my old journal entries and read the scriptures that I had recorded and some of my thoughts on those days. It was very helpful in reminding me of God's promises. I was having a tough evening, and I was questioning my ability to have a clue what God meant for me. Other than salvation, what can I be sure He promised me? How do I know it isn't just wishful thinking on my part?

2. I can't say that I have had any experience with a physical idol like that. My idols tend to be living humans. The closest object like the Athena statue I can come up with is the tv, but I don't bow down and worship it in the conventional sense. I do, however, spend a lot of time in front of it.

I will be there on the 8th. I haven't been stirred as much by the recipes in the book, I'm afraid, so I'll probably just make something else. What, I haven't decided yet.

#1- From my earlier posts, you all can tell that I am a busy-body and not at all good at sitting still and/or listening. So, I know that I fail miserably at listening to God. I have often over the past few years had a visual pop into my head of God using his index finger to tap my forehead repeatedly saying "Hello, my dear child, just stop and listen for one moment, I'm handling this situation, so you can sit back and patiently wait for peace". I think that we all have become hard wired to be busy and our human brains have a difficult time organizing so it's easier to be at full-tilt or at stop, at least that is how it is for me. I have to force myself to stop and listen. Because I spend a lot of time in the van, taking kids to school or traveling for work, I try to be intentional about using that time to listen either through praise & worship music or scripture on CD. I wish that I could say that I have developed a steadfast and successful method for studying God's Word and for listening, but I have yet to do that. I start something only to find myself struggling to stay on track.

#2- I personally have never had an experience like this, but can share that when we were in Russia, it was shocking to see how people treated Lenin's tomb located in Red Square, almost like an altar or a shrine, yet did not do the same with St. Basil's Cathedral that is located in the same area.

#3-You know, there are days where I feel like I am constantly trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. I have to fight evil temptations that surround me, and for me, it's things like a spirit of bitterness, impatience, jealousy. God keeps reminding me that He is the source for peace and success in this life. He provides joy and humor in the little things of life, and most of all, He gives me a renewed strength in the midst of daily storms.
